Self Employment- Balancing a Juggling Act

Self employment is an honorable aspiration often seen as being the dream of many but in retrospect requires hard work. In the regular job market our creativity and initiative is confined to the goals and aspirations of our employers, our output is channeled to fit in with someone else's output and we can become subdued.

In your own setup you have the freedom to design, develop and deliver your ideas in the way that best suits your own goals. However, administrative tasks, statutory obligations, sourcing other services, along with other time consuming requirements are all apart of being self employed. You need to be many people at different times, and it is the management of these different aspects that is critical.

Limited budgets too can also play a part in whether it is possible for you to be self employed. It might look and sound impressive, but it is hard work. Significant to the management of these different roles, is to operate with a focus that can avoid undertaking tasks or actions that really aren’t making the most productive use of your time.

When it comes to tax management in self employment, sleepless nights may occur. Countless hours can be spent worrying over that end of year tax bill, which in the end takes up precious time for other important tasks. There is however a workable solution that takes around 5 minutes of your time each week. Using a tax payment service allows you to pay in small, regular, manageable increments as you go along. Your ability to be honest with yourself and how you work will have you delegating what really is not worth your time. If someone else has worked out an effective way to sort out your tax let them to do it.

When you are self-employed, your income is directly related to the success of your business. Most businesses take some time, perhaps a few years, before they start turning a profit. There may be tremendous profits, or not. Without incorporation, there may even be debt. There will not be anyone to pass the big problems to, but must resolve them yourself. Your job typically will not end at a certain time. When things need to get done, you must do it. There will be stress. But the potential advantages of being self-employed are tremendous: wealth, pride, independence, and satisfaction.
