“No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” Albert Einstein

Happy New Year from us all at MyMate and may 2011 bring you the business success that you are no doubt planning for. I thought I would start the New Year off with a thought on thinking.
Thinking as Edward De Bono points out in his book Thinking Course “. . . is a skill that can be improved by training, by practice and through learning to do it better”
We may be intelligent, we may even consider ourselves a bit of a creative thinker able to come up with clever ideas or repartee, however does that mean we can think in goal oriented ways.
Like a car no matter the horsepower that may lie in waiting under that bonnet, it is the skill of the driver that will ultimately determine its performance.
We all think, every moment of every day our brains are ticking over, thinking. The thought like the engine is not so much the indicator of end results. What we do with the thought, where you lead that thought, what other thoughts you might add to it, the emotions you throw into the mix, your processing abilities or lack of them, will determine your performance.
Evolving our results not only in business, requires us to think differently but as Einstein so eloquently states, a different level of consciousness is required, different without skill is just different and somewhat hit and miss. Would you call your thinking processes skilled? Does your thinking support goal focused action?
Two of the major aims of coaching is to create a sense of consciouness around beliefs that support or interfere with the way you want to live and to become more skilled in the way you think. Our best thinking can be responsible for all sorts of crappy results so developing a skilled focus in both these areas alone, transforms results.

Stuart is a Taxi driver in New Zealand. He is an incrediably clever operator and a great ideas man. He has always worked for himself and executed what he has ever done with well thought out genius. Talking to him the other day, he mentioned when he was in the removal business, he always handed his clients a ‘thank you for your business’ card with a discounted offer for the next time they wanted to use his service or he would say “give it to a friend, I am happy to honour it if you want to pass it on”

He said “people love to refer, they love to know they gave the recommendation, they love to know they know the right person, it is human nature.”

Stuart is right, it does satisfy some inner need, being the one that knows and it helps everyone. To refer you need to foster relationships with people and as a small business person developing a referral base is a great way to add value. I love it if a client needs help in an area that is not my own, being able to say “hey I know someone.” I can qualify my referrals, that way expectations are managed .

Referring is about giving and givers gain. You may not be todays recipient but you may be another day because of a referral you gave. Referring is about “paying it forward” Anyone involved with Mymate understands what Stuart so insightfully stated. You may not want our rapid web develpment, you may not want bookkeeping or coaching but hey we all know people so call us. Adding value can be done in many ways and they don’t have to be direct.

Let me ask you a question . . .
Do you HAVE a target?
If so are you ‘ON’ target

It is amazing, we can know what we want, even know how to make it happen yet it doesn’t. Or we don’t know what we want and either way it leaves us feeling the same way, dissatisfied, frustrated, whatever you feel when you aren’t living ‘ON’ target

Can anyone guess why I have emphasized ‘ON’ target?

Heres the thing, anytime I have achieved a goal, or turned a dream into reality I wasn’t aiming to have these things happen. I had already decided they were going to happen. What I was doing, every action I took, every thought I had, was about keeping me ‘ON’ target.

A mind ON target is a mind that becomes curious and alert to giving a target substance. You dont don’t even need clarity to begin, what you do need is a daily commitment to a constant and never ending attitude of progression and improvement.

Questions, goal directed questions are the most powerful way to keep the mind curious and therefore possibility focused. Buy yourself a packet of visitors cards, for anyone not old enough to know what they are they are blank business size cards you can generally buy from a newsagent.

What do you want? Write it on your card and keep asking your mind to focus on finding an answer or a solution to your business goals or personal dreams. If it can’t find a satisfactory answer today then tomorrow write a new card out and either refine the question or ask it again and keep testing.

Keep defining and refining untill presto you have happening, what you had already decided was going to happen, you just didn’t know how. You already knew your daily commitment to constant and never ending improvement through the stratigic use of your target focused questions would take care of the how, anyhow!

Don’t forget to comment, feedback is important, let me know what are you interested in.

Why is a question fraught with difficulty, it needs to be asked with purposeful intent or it becomes just another ‘explain yourself’ type scenario which reeks of control. In a lot of ways ‘why’ is a misused and misunderstood tool for both personal and business development. It has by nature the core quality of curiosity and if used for the powerful intent of increasing knowledge and skill, then it naturally leads us toward developing a greater sense of accountability and responsibility, both great qualities for getting stuff happening.

Why, used well has the fundamental quality of curiosity and without curiosity there is no progress. Taking an idea from idea to successful achievement is a process, a process like any journey not only needs a map, or the way, its a good idea to keep checking every now and again we are still on track.

Test and measure, the resourceful use of ‘why’. We need to diagnose the problem or the solution we want to find, set a goal for what we want to achieve, take action and then evaluate. Using this data we diagnose again or learn from, refine the goal or maybe find out its just fine, take adjusted action and keep evaluating etc. Click here for full article. Success is a process, by evaluating our process we increase the chance for progress.

“Grasshopper what are you thinking”
“Master I am thinking about, what you told me to think about”
“And what is that”
“How great I want to be”
“Grasshopper tell me what you are focusing on”
“How hard it is”
“Grasshopper”
“Yes Master”
“You didn’t put your running shoes out this morning did you?”

The dilemma for many of us; we think about the usual bring about, if only we remembered to think about what we really wanted, life could be great!

“What you think about, you bring about” Bill Harris

A young man who attended one of my recent values workshops (if you want to check out why you do what you do or don’t, look at your values) mentioned he went running most days. Not being naturally motivated towards exercise, I was impressed,
“Wow that’s incredibly motivated” I exclaimed in awe.
He shrugged his pragmatic shoulders and succinctly replied,
“Not really, it depends on my shoes”

Further exploration revealed, when he remembers to put his running shoes out so he can see them when he gets up, he goes for a run. If he forgets to put his shoes out, he doesn’t go running.

He highlighted an interesting point about motivation; it often needs a trigger. It can be pertinent to specifically consider not only what you need to do to action what you want, but how you will remember to do what your mind may not wish to do.

When the unconscious mind is not enthusiastic, it has many strategies along with selective amnesia to cleverly resist taking even desired goal aligned action, no matter how rewarding the after action glow may feel.

I have only watched three football games this year, not enough to call myself a football expert I know (enough for an opinion?), however as a keen observer of success affirming parallels I did come to the conclusion that points, do not win premierships.

Anything either side of those inner posts of goal glory are costly, unless it is down to the wire. A point in those tense critical moments just before the final siren as these titans of the modern day sports arena, neck to neck battle it out for that thrilling one point lead; then it has that exciting winner quality.

On Saturday I also had the privilege of accompanying a friend to her appointment at an exclusive boutique in Sydney to get fitted for a designer dress for her up coming nuptials. My value add for the day is my ability to drill down to what is important therefore increasing the chance of ending up with the perfect look, which to our delight did happen.

What does this have to do with football, absolutely nothing? Two unique events in one day did have me reflecting on performance and specifically, its impact on results. If an action is to maximize a result, then you need too make sure your skills and attitude are equal to the task at hand, other wise half measures avail us of a little, or worse a loss.

Points, cost the Saints a premiership on Saturday and it cost the boutique a substantial sale. They scored a point for being the only stockist of this particular designer in Australia but couldn’t kick the winning goal (the sale) because of poor performance (customer service)

I don’t know about you but if I’m going to play a game in life, I would rather win so are my goal kicking skills up to the task and if not what is required?

Have a great week and please feel free to comment.

They’ll walk right . . . where?

This week I am going to talk about our motivation filters or often called the direction filter. This filter is all about what drives us, what we want or what we don’t want. If I asked you to tell me what you want in 30 seconds or less what would happen . . .

You could tell me

You could tell me after you told me about what you didn’t want

You have no idea

Our direction filter is the most obvious and important clue as to why we get what we want or get what we don’t want - what we think about we bring about.

This is a results enhancing concept to keep in mind when dealing with a client or customer. Are they describing to you what they want or what they don’t want. If they are telling you what they want, then show them the solution. If they are telling you what they don’t want, then solve their problem.

Everybody wants to be understood and whether you agree with where they are coming from or not, who cares, they don’t. They just want to be ’got’ enough to be given the the solution to what they are moving towards or have you solve the problem from which they are moving away from.

It is not the same thing moving toward a solution or away from a problem, how much more respectful do you think your interactions with your clients and customers will be if you can hear their need. (53.4seconds)
